Pizza San Diego
me driving by Bronx Pizza and not stopping: see youse guys later! Pizza is a tricky business because everyone clamors to tell you what their favorite is and why. Yadda yadda, but you always hear the same restaurants, especially in San Diego: Bronx Pizza, Pizza Port, Filippi’s, and now Lefty’s and Luigi’s (though it’s Pizzeria Luigi, thank you) and one of my favorites Hoboken Pizza in PB. While they all have their merits there is a fundamental problem with comparing pizzas when you don’t have a measuring stick to be the ultimate judge. In places like Chicago, New York and New Jersey you don’t have this problem because there is a type to judge all by. In San Diego there is no type. But there are several joints purporting to be authentic area types, like “San Diego’s original New York Pizza” or “Best Chicago Style Pizza in North Park.” There’s something lame about that but whatever. If you need a thrill you can latch on and pretend what you’re eating is “Like” what you really want, which is wherever pizza….Thanks! Just what I wanted, “Like” food. But I digress, we need degrees of movement away from the original source, if there even is one, and we need the thrill and spectacle of crowding around and saying those words: “Man this is the best pizza since I went trekking through Chicago.” But I digress again. Originality, the source, go there and eat it, if you can’t eat something close to it. OK here are my pizza reviews for SAN DIEGO: Luigi’s: Like above, reminding me of my youth, upstate New York, upstate New Jersey, state New York, East Coast. Eat at Pizzeria Luigi and you won’t be disappointed. Read my cleverly worded (and very abstract) review of it here.
