Mexican Food

flautas plate at pokez

Yes! Don't get me started on Mexican food in San Diego. Isn't this as close as you can get to Mexico in the US? We see Tijuana from our house dude. And yet, the city is plagued by tons and tons of the worst excuse for Mexican food you will ever find in your life. WTF is going on here people!?!! You really have to dig to find the goods!

But, I digress, once you do find the goods, you have the goods, but it may not be what you expect. So live out the culture wars of Enchilada vs. Birria aqui with me as I go around stuffing as much Mexican foods into my gullet as my wife will let me.

There are gems, but be careful, because they are far and few between. And stay away from Old Town, whatever you do, I beg you please, tourist or lifelong resident alike, please please please do not go there, go far from there, now.

I will update the site as my reviews come in, please return gentle eater, and find me well.

El Callejon Encinitas - A favorite of ours for their tacos, but I've had some bad food here as well. Check my review for my 2 pesos of what you should and shouldn't eat at this North County staple.

La Fonda Baja Mexico - Even in Mexico you can find overpriced bland Mexican food.  It's pretty amazing.  I love going down to Baja but I haven't found a great place to eat at yet.  La Fonda is pretty good for the views, the drinks and the beans.

Pokez Vegetarian - Don't be put off by "vegetarian" because this place has some awesome carne asada, among other very fresh, very tasty, and very cheap (and yes, vegetarian and even vegan) items. Unfortunately their service needs some help, unless they are fighting the system by being inattentive, but who knows. Whatever, quite frankly the whole thing is well worth it so go here immediately.

Super Cocina - Perhaps the best Mexican food in San Diego in terms of home cooked comfort food (ie stews and meats and beans - NOT: burritos and tacos!). Come and get some love at Super Cocina.
