Greek Food
I lived in Cyprus for a year and travelled to Greece a few times so I've been lucky enough to eat real Greek food. On the East Coast too, for some reason, most diners are run by Greek families and the menus are always 100 pages long and have Greek food all over them that is pretty good (hey I lived in NJ and NY too). What I have found for some reason is that Middle Easterners open Greek restaurants, calling them Mediterranean Cuisine or something, and give out gyros. I think they are pandering to an American audience that is fearful of anything Arab but who all love gyros because every mall in the country has them. These restaurants usually don't have good Greek food, but who knows. Despite their similarities Greek food and Arab food (generic term I know) are very different. Just try eating a Gyro vs. a Shawarma and check it out. Unfortunately not too many Greek joints are very good, especially in San Diego, though there are some that have some good food (I am a quiet fan of fast-food Greek joint "Daphne's"). Here's what I've found: Cafe Athena 1 - I call this "1" because I've had food here before and liked it, but this time the food was worse than Taco Bell. Come on Cafe Athena, step it up please. Perhaps there will be a Cafe Athena 2 entry at some point, so I leave it at that.
