american food

By "American" food I mean generic white-person food in the United States. Unfortunately that's what the label seems to mean universally anyway when it's used online or in newspapers. "American" food, different from the rest of the world and non-white people by its blandness, uninspired presentation, mashed potatoes, and chicken breast. Salt and pepper are the only needed spices. Maybe I should change the category to white people food? What do you think? American sounds so elitist and last century.

This category includes everything white-person except for burgers and pizza and bbq. Excuse me for being blunt, but you know what I'm talking about and yes it is problematic because burritos and pizza are as American as Apple Pie, but, well, let's just say "American" for now and see what happens (see quote from Nobel Prize winner Toni Morrison below), here are my reviews of American food in San Diego:

************************************

Argyle Steakhouse - Four Seasons Aviara - A swanky, comfortable, hidden gem at the 18th hole of the Four Seasons' golf course. Dimly lit, best fresh food, and a price that you won't mind paying when you finish your meal.

San Diego Chicken Pie Shop - Unironically Good. The SD pie shop has been serving up homemade chicken pot pies for years. You can take a batch to go and bake them at home and pretend like you made them from scratch too, if you are so inclined.

on being "American": "To identify someone as South African is to say very little; we need the adjective 'white' or 'black' or 'colored' to make our meaning clear. In this country it is quite the reverse. American means white, and Africanist people struggle to make the term applicable to themselves with ethnicity and hyphen after hyphen after hyphen." Toni Morrison Playing in the Dark: Whiteness and the Literary Imagination.
